Death robbed Uganda of yet another human rights activist, Meddi Kaggwa early today.

Kaggwa aged 64, the hitherto Uganda Human Rights Commission chairman (UHRC) collapsed around Mulago as he drove himself to the office at 7 am.

Bystanders who broke into his car after they realized he was convulsing rushed him to Case Clinic where he was pronounced dead upon arrival.

“Med Kaggwa was brought here by a doctor who found him lying unconscious in his car at Mulago roundabout. He arrived here at 7:55 am. We worked tirelessly but at 9:00 am, he breathed his last. The cause of his death is not known yet,” Dr. Patrick Kaliika, Director of Case Hospital said.

Mourners have gathered at his residence at Butakabukirwa close off Mawanda road in Kamwokya, a Kampala suburb.

The UHRC officials told this news site that the burial arrangements would be revealed later.

Yesterday Kaggwa made a presentation before the Police council in Naguru on the status and observance of human rights.

The former member of both the Ugandan parliament and the East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) was scheduled to take part in a media round table discussion organized by the UN children’s agency (Unicef) to commemorate World Children’s Day, today.

Kaggwa, a qualified lawyer has been serving as the chairperson of the Uganda Human Rights Commission.

He studied from the National University of Ireland, where he obtained a Master of Laws degree, Makerere University, and the Law Development Centre.

He was a member of the Constituent Assembly that drafted the 1995 Constitution of Uganda and a commissioner of the Uganda Constitutional Commission. Additionally, he has been head of the Department of Law at the Law Development Centre and held a Political Office as Minister in Charge of Political Affairs in the Office of the President.

He is survived by a widow and five children.
