ABIDJAN, Ivory Coast|SHIFTMEDIA| Just when his second five-year term was about to end as president of Ivory Coast, Alassane Ouattara declared he would not contest for the presidency again. He nominated his Prime Minister as his successor, but he later died of a heart attack in early July causing a rift regarding another successor for the ruling RHDP Party.

Amadou Gon Coulibaly who had just returned to the West African country from France died after attending a Cabinet meeting.
Ouatarra, aged 76  who served as Prime Minister for Ivory Coast between 1990-1993 had vowed to return to contest for Presidency if Henri Konan Bédié returns back.

Henri Konan Bédié, who was Speaker of Parliament when the Late Felix Houpheit was President rule Ivory Coast from 1993 to 1999. He is currently the President of the Democratic Party of Côte d’Ivoire – African Democratic Rally.
Though the constitution only allows for a two-term (5 years) rule, it is not yet clear if the ruling party will amend the constitution ahead of the polls in October 31.

Without surprise, the president’s RHDP party officially nominated Outarra as a candidate during a convention in Abidjan on Wednesday.

Ouattara had said he would not run again, to give way to the next generation.

But everything changed with the death of his prime minister and hopeful successor Amadou Gon Coulibaly.

Ouattara could announce his decision on running again during a planned speech to the nation on August 6.

Opposition groups in Ivory Coast oppose Ouattara extending his 10-year reign, citing the third term in office would be unconstitutional.
