ABIDJAN, Ivory Coast|SHIFTMEDIA| Just when his second five-year term was about to end as president of Ivory Coast, Alassane Ouattara declared he would not contest for the presidency again. He nominated his Prime Minister as his successor, but he later died of a heart attack in early July causing a rift regarding another successor for the ruling RHDP Party.
Without surprise, the president’s RHDP party officially nominated Outarra as a candidate during a convention in Abidjan on Wednesday.
Ouattara had said he would not run again, to give way to the next generation.
But everything changed with the death of his prime minister and hopeful successor Amadou Gon Coulibaly.
Ouattara could announce his decision on running again during a planned speech to the nation on August 6.
Opposition groups in Ivory Coast oppose Ouattara extending his 10-year reign, citing the third term in office would be unconstitutional.
