GENEVA |SHIFTMEDIA|-It is not yet time to celebrate as the World Health Organisation (WHO) has warned of the second wave of the deadly Corona pandemic.

Speaking during an online briefing, Dr, Mike Ryan, the WHO Head of emergencies said countries, where coronavirus infections are declining, could still face an “immediate second peak” if they let up too soon on measures to halt the outbreak, the World Health Organization said on Monday.

The world is still in the middle of the first wave of the coronavirus outbreak, WHO emergencies head Dr. Mike Ryan told an online briefing, noting that while cases are declining in many countries they are still increasing in Central and South America, South Asia and Africa.

Ryan said epidemics often come in waves, which means that outbreaks could come back later this year in places where the first wave has subsided. There was also a chance that infection rates could rise again more quickly if measures to halt the first wave were lifted too soon.

“When we speak about a second wave classically what we often mean is there will be a first wave of the disease by itself, and then it recurs months later. And that may be a reality for many countries in a number of months’ time,” Ryan said.

“But we need also to be cognizant of the fact that the disease can jump up at any time. We cannot make assumptions that just because the disease is on the way down now it is going to keep going down and we are get a number of months to get ready for a second wave. We may get a second peak in this wave.”

He said countries in Europe and North America should “continue to put in place the public health and social measures, the surveillance measures, the testing measures and a comprehensive strategy to ensure that we continue on a downwards trajectory and we don’t have an immediate second peak.”

Many European countries and U.S. states have taken steps in recent weeks to lift lockdown measures that curbed the spread of the disease but caused severe harm to economies.

Ugandan cases soar

Meanwhile the confirmed cases of the corona virus victims in Uganda has now reached 222 after 14 new cases were reported on Monday.

According to the Ministry of Health, the new cases were registered from 1,739 samples tested on Sunday, apparently, all contacts to previously confirmed positive truck drivers.

According to the Ministry of Health, all the contacts were under quarantine at the time of the test.

Over 1500 people according to the ministry are under quarantine at 150 sites in the country, the majority of which are located in the northern part of the country.
Also five positive foreign truck drivers from Tanzania were denied entry and handed over to the authorities of their country. These were got out of the 655 samples tested at the border.

So far over 200 foreign truck drivers who tested positive in the previous week have been denied entry into Uganda and referred back to their country of origin for treatment.

Previously, truck drivers would be allowed to enter the country before getting their results and would be tracked in case the tests turned returned positive. This posed a huge threat to the population as these would freely interact with people in the various communities.

However, as the situation got dire, the government was forced to roll out a new plan where the truck driver now have to wait for their results and once they are found positive, the foreigners are handed over to their respective countries while the Ugandans are immediately taken for treatment.

Similarly the police are hunting for seven truck drivers who vanished in Ndeeba, a Kampala suburb after realizing that their results tested positive for the Corona Virus. SOURCE/REUTERS
