DAR ES SALAAM, Tanzania|SHIFTMEDIA| Malawi’s President Lazarus Chakwera is in Tanzania for a three-day state visit. The new opposition leader arrived along with his wife and senior ministers early on Wednesday. He was received by his host President John Pombe Magufuli at the Julius Nyerere Internation Airport.
Chakwere was was on a one-day state visit to Mozambique ON Tuesday where he held bilateral talks with Mozambican leader Filipe Nyusi.
Chakwera who led the opposition Tonse Alliance defeated incumbent Prof. Peter Mutharika (Below) after a court-ordered a re-run of the highly rigged elections.
The court ruled that the May 2019 elections that gave Mutharika a second term in office were marred with massive vote-rigging.
The new Malawian leader, a former Church pastor has in the last week also visited his neighbours in Zimbabwe and Zambia.
Chakwera who apparently wore a facemask while in Mozambique on Tuesday was seen arriving with his wife and entire entourage without facemasks, his host (Magufuli) too wore no face mask.
While in Tanzania, Chakwera will visit the Malawi Cargo Center as well as the port of Dar es Salaam.
A state House Statement from Tanzania noted that the two presidents will also lay a foundation stone for the on-going construction works of the modern ultra Mbezi Mwisho Upcountry Bus Terminal in Dar es Salaam
Chakwera Talks with Filipe Nyusi
Chakwera arrived Mozambique through Tete Airport where he connected to Songo township by a helicopter. Songo township is located in the central part of Mozambique 130 kilometres from Tete
Chakwera and Nyusi discussed issues which are targeted at further enhancing the relations between the two countries.
Chakwera also visited the Cahora Bassa Hydro-power Generation Plant.
Chakwera said Malawi wants to bolster ties with neighboring countries for the mutual benefit of the people.
