KAMPALA, Uganda|SHIFTMEDIA| Not all is well for local artist and upcoming Kampala Lord Mayor contestant,  Joseph Mayanja aka Jose Chameleon after the Anti Corruption Court in Kampala issued a criminal summons for breaching Road Safety and Traffic Rules.

The Mama Mia artist is wanted for over illegal possession of an imported and undeclared vehicle from South Sudan.

According to the summons issued by the Chief Magistrate, Ms. Pamella Ocaya Lumunu, the singer is required to appear in the Kololo-based court on July 30, 2020.

He is wanted over being in possession of uncustomed goods, (a South Sundanese car, a Toyota Land Cruiser V8 model GRJ 200). Uncustomed goods are goods that are illegally imported and are not declared to custom agents.

“Whereas your attendance is necessary to answer to the charges of being in possession of uncustomed goods, you are hereby commanded by the Uganda government to appear in the Anti-Corruption Court at Kololo on the 30th July 2020 at 9:00am,” read in part the summons of the court to the singer.

It’s alleged that on April 12 this year, the singer was found in possession of vehicle registration number SSD 499B Toyota Land Cruiser V8 model GRJ valued at Shs. 137, 350,725 by the Uganda Revenue Authority Enforcement Team, which intercepted the said vehicle.

Chameleon was intercepted by URA enforcement teams at Bulange Mengo in Kampala, and required to avail the documents regarding the legal status of his car in Uganda which he promised to avail but he has reportedly failed since.

URA says the singer has not paid the import duty for his car valued at Ugx137.4 million and yet he knew that the vehicle was uncustomed.
Chameleon is also charged for failure to produce documentation when required contrary to Section 204 (b) of the East African Community Customs Management Act, 2004.

We have learnt that the ‘troubled’ monster car was a gift to Chameleon by Achai Wiir, a renown South Sudanese Businesswoman and socialite who paid Chameleon to sing her a song titled “Achai Wiir,” and also perform at her wedding.

The vehicle is still registered in South Sudanese license plates to date. Those close to the self-proclaimed music doctor say it is his most loved possession hence probably the reason why he wasn’t willing to give it over to URA.

Chameleon revealed to this website that he has alerted his lawyers to defend him in court come July 30, Watch this space.

The singer said he is joining politics to oust President Yoweri Museveni whom he said has betrayed the country. Chameleone he is ready to defend the country’s ideals of democracy.

“This is a new crusade. They branded us as thugs but it was because we trusted them and they left us poor. In 1986, I was like 6 or 7 years when they took over and welcomed him(Museveni) as our darling but has let us down and people have lost hope in the country. Museveni’s mistakes are for his entire government and allies,” he said during a press conference last year as he announced his Lord Mayoral bid.

Chameleone, who has declared his intention to contest for the Kampala Lord mayoral race in the 2021 general elections to unseat the incumbent Erias Lukwago, also said he is not in the race for money.

“I am in this struggle with you and not because of any financial gains. If I wanted money I would have gone to board the bus (NRM) because they have money. I am here to tell you that I am one of you. I’m a Ugandan with rights to identify with the oppressed or the oppressor. I have decided to identify with the oppressed,” he added.
