TORTURE: Bishop Stuart Mbarara University Lecturer, Atwongyriwe Remanded For Burning Maid

MBARARA, Uganda [SHIFTMEDIA] For her erroneous act, a 39 year old lecturer at Bishop Stuart University in Mbarara has been remanded for causing grievous harm to her 21 year old house help, Racheal Ninsiima.

According Uganda Police investigations, Atwongyirwe Doreen, poured hot boiling water on Ninsiima on September 25, 2024 when she returned and found her children had not been bathed in time.  Eye witnesses told police detectives that as Ninsiima tried to explain to Atwongyirwe, the delay, she didn’t listen, but decided to burn her with scolding hot water.

Racheal sought medical attention at a nearby clinic and was admitted overnight after which She reported the incident to Katete police the following day, leading to Doreen’s arrest.

Addressing the media at the weekly security meeting in Kampala,  Uganda Police   Spokesman Kituuma Rusoke  said the Force had expressed their concern over the incident. Uganda Police Force has also called for respect for Humans dignity and safety.

Uganda Police Force :”We strongly condemn the violence and mistreatment of domestic workers. Every individual has the right to dignity, respect, and safety.”

Doreen Atwongyirwe a resident of Katete Central Cell was arrested by Police in Mbarara and arraigned in Court.

Charges Slapped

The Grade One Magistrate in Mbarara City charged Atwongyirwe with acts of intention to cause grievous harm. Her Worship Esther Bagala told the accused that cases of causing grievous harm can only be heard by the Chief Magistrates Court. Bagala told the accused that she was being charged by the State contrary to section 199 paragraph (a) of the penal Code Act.

Atwongyirwe heard the Magistrate remarks and acknowledged the charges read before her. The maid, Racheal Ninsiima told court that when her boss returned from work, she found she had just bathed the first baby and was in the process of bathing the second baby. “When i tried to explain to her, she got the hot water i was going to use to bathe the second baby and poured in in my chest,: said Ninsiima. She told court that for the one month she had worked for Atwongyirwe, she has always been harassing her.

The case was adjourned to October 15 2024.
