Though most of our urban kids don’t appreciate the beauty of rural schooling, those who went to rural schools admire and recall with happiness the beauty of chewing sugarcane while going to school, when heading back home or during those inter-school football competitions.

Today when you drive, ride or walk in Kampala, it is a common thing to see sugarcane being vended in streets by young boys and girls especially near traffic light junctions.

These sugarcanes are already peeled, chopped, sliced and nicely packed in polythene papers (white buveera). Though the hygiene associated with them is wanting, the health benefits of sugarcane is worthy noting.
