HARARE, ZIMBABWE-SHIFTEMEDIA- The third wave of Covid 19 is taking a nasty toll on the number of deaths in Zimbabwe.
The increased level of infections started in the second week of June, indicating a further sharp rise than what was recorded in the second wave early this year.
According to The Herald, the highest rate of daily reported infections in this third wave was registered on Friday, with 2 683 new patients, way above the 1 365 seen on 5 January, the highest daily total in the second wave.
The third wave also saw a sharp rise in the number of deaths with 59 deaths, the highest so far.
The other highest death toll reported was 70 that was registered in the second wave in January.
Zimbabwe last week received a consignment of 2 million Covid 19 vaccination. The government has urged the public to turn up for vaccination as a measure to contain the further spread of the virus.
According to the latest statistics from the Ministry of Health and Child Care, there were Zimbabwe 672 hospitalized patients on Friday with 433 having mild to moderate symptoms, 63 with severe symptoms, and 33 in intensive care units. The other 143 patients were not showing Covid-19 symptoms as yet but had to be in hospital because of other or special reasons.
Reports from health experts indicate that funerals are the major single source of infection, at least outside cities.
The government has instituted tough measures on funerals warning of dire consequences should the numbers in funerals exceed the recommended 30.
The police have also been active in enforcing the general and special lockdown provisions. In a detailed breakdown of the 4 304 arrests on Wednesday last week, the bulk, 2 437, were of people not wearing masks.
