KAMPALA, Uganda|SHIFTMEDIA| President Yoweri Museveni will address the nation on Monday, June 1 2020 at 8 pm as the nation seeks to open up after close to three months of lockdown.
ICT Minister Judith Nabakooba in a tweet confirmed that the President will address the nation and give guidance ahead of the lifting the ban on public transport on June 4th.
Last week president Museveni said schools would as well open for finalists on June 4th after a nationwide supply of masks by the government.
COVID-19 Case Skyrock
The trend of the increasing cases of COVID-19 is very worrying as the nation woke up to yet a sharp rise of cases with 84 new cases, the highest number registered in a single day ever since the first case was confirmed in March this year.
The Ministry of Health on Sunday morning said the country’s total number of confirmed cases had risen to 413.
Of these, 52 cases are truck drivers, 50 of whom arrived from South Sudan via Elegu, while two arrived from Kenya through Busia. Additionally, 32 cases are contacts with previously confirmed cases.
“All were under quarantine at the time of testing,” said a statement posted on the ministry’s social media platforms.
Relatedly, 51 foreign truck drivers who tested positive at points of entry were denied entry and handed over to their country of origin.
Meanwhile, Rwanda registered its first COVID-19 death at the weekend. According to the Rwandan Ministry of Health, the 65-year-old was a truck driver who fell sick from a “neighboring” country and returns back to his home country after falling seriously ill.
Rwanda didn’t name the neighboring country. Kenya similarly registered 143 new cases bringing its tally to 1888 with at least 63 deaths so far.
