Police Summons Gen. Tumukunde Over Meetings With UPDF Veterans

Gen Henry Tumukunde set to appear before CID in Kampala

KAMPALA, Uganda|SHIFTMEDIA| Presidential hopeful and former Security Minister Lt. Gen. Henry Tumukunde has been summoned to appear before the Criminal Investigations Department at Kibuli to record a statement on allegations that he held meetings with army veterans to discuss politics.

This according to the Grace Akullo, the Director of Criminal Investigations is against the UPDF Act and contravenes articles of the constitution.

The letter to Gen Tumukunde, (right) and signed by the AIGP Grace Akullo is copied to Chief of Defence Forces, Inspector of Police and Deputy Inspector General of Police. In the letter, Akullo observes that Tumukunde has on several days at his residence and offices in Kololo held meetings with veterans contrary to the UPDF Act.

“The Director of Criminal Investigations is investigating allegations to the effect that on a number of occasions at your office and residence both in Kololo and other venues within the country, you have held meetings with army veterans discussing issues related to politics,” the letter reads in part. Grace Akullo asked Tumukunde to report to CIID headquarters in Kibuli at 2pm on Wednesday (today).

It further states that: “Your actions if true contravenes Section of the 1995 Constitution and the UPDF Act.”

The summons came after Gen Tumukunde was arrested and released by Police in Buikwe District on Tuesday on allegations that he convened a meeting in which he defied the COVID-19 Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) of social distancing.

Tumukunde who was released after recording a statement at Njeru Police warned whoever is behind his continuous arrests. He said the arrests are geared towards making him lose hope about making change in the governance of Uganda.

Gen Tumukunde who was due to hold seven meetings in Buikwe district was briefly held after he was arrested for meeting with his supporters without observing the Ministry of Health guidelines against Covid-19.

When contacted, Gen. Tumukunde said he would abide by the summons saying it wont deter his goals
