GULU-SHIFTMEDIA- When her husband had the urge for a drink and decided to take the wife’s shs10,000 ($2.5), little did he know that it would be his last drinking session.
Patricia Ocan aged 24 was stabbed by his wife Mercy Layet on December 17, 2017, just a week to Christmas.
Three years down the road Layet has finally been sentenced to 28 years for the murder of his husband. She killed him for taking his shs10,000.
Layet who was aged 22 when she stabbed Ocan will come out of jail aged 54 years.
Mercy Layet, a resident of Okwici village, Angara parish, Akwang sub-county in Kitgum district was convicted and sentenced for murdering Patrick Ocan, 24, a senior two student at the time of his death.
Court heard that Layet stabbed Ocan to death with a knife on the night of December 17, 2017, from their home after Ocan returned from a drinking joint and was demanding for his Shs 10,000 that she had borrowed earlier.
Prosecution led by Patrick Omiya noted that Layet after violating section 188 and 189 of the Penal Code Act, ran and reported herself to her relatives in Kitgum, leading to her arrest.
After stabbing the hubby, Layet hid the blood-stained knife in the corner of their hut. Detectives recovered the knife when they visited the scene.
Justice Stephen Mubiru who made the judgement noted that sentence for murder is death, but being a first offender Layet will serve 28 years and 11 months in jail.
Layet was sentenced to 32 years but since she had been in remand for three years and one month, the sentence was computed to 28 years and 11 months.
She however according to Justice Mubiru, has a right to appeal the judgement in 14 days.
