OYAM, Uganda [SHIFTMEDIA] Security operatives in Oyam district have launched a massive crackdown on graft and motorcycle robberies.

The operations are led and supervised by the Resident District Commissioner Rtd ASP Hope Atuhaire, who also acts as the head of security in the district.

Speaking to our reporter in Oyam, the tough talking Atuhaire said Oyam had become a hub for motor cycle (boda boda) robberies in Acholi sub region.

‘There is a lot of crime in Oyam. Many people in the community still believe in witchcraft, however we are doing a lot of sensitization hoping they will have a mindset change,” said the RDC.

She said last week with the support of her deputy, Newton Muhanguzi they uprooted gardens of marijuana in Oyam district.

Boda boda Thefts

Atuhaire said the issue of boda boda thefts and robberies had become unbearable prompting her team to take a firm position of uprooting the vice. She said boda boda’s were being stolen from as far as Kampala and across other regions in Uganda and sold in Acholi and Lango regions.

“Recently we got information regarding a motorcycle that was robbed from Kampala. We tracked it and discovered it was in Lira,” she explained.

The RDC said with support from the RCC Lira City, Lawrence Egole, they managed to recover the motorcycle number plate UEZ586N after its parts were dismantled.

According to detectives, the bike was reportedly stolen from Regal Paints Banda on July 12 2022, a month later, on 12 August 2022, it was seen heading to Lira from Kamdin. Security, according to RDC Atuhaire tracked the bike to Minakulu in Oyam where a suspect was arrested after being found in possession of the number plate of the said bike.

Police Connives With Suspect

In a rare nasty twist of events, the RDC discovered that one of the top police officials was instead collaborating with the said suspect.

“When the suspect was traced to Minakulu, they reported to police, but apparently the officer AIP Eyom Michael said he knew him and called him to come to police. The suspected thief instead switched off his phone,” said Atuhaire.

“I ordered him to produce the suspect or face jail.  He failed to get him so I directed the OC Station Minakulu to charged AIP Eyom Michael with aiding a suspect to escape,” explained Atuhaire.

The community in Oyam hailed the RDC for personally taking the mantle to address the boda boda robberies.

“I am not ready to leave any thief for police involved in that thuggery to remain scot free,” she vowed.
