By PATRICK JARAMOGI
KAMPALA, Uganda [SHIFT MEDIA ] The State House Anti Corruption Unit on orders of His Excellency the President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has commenced investigations regarding the arrest of a Minister’s mother over stolen iron sheets meant for Karamoja.
Those arrested include the mother to Hon Mary Goretti Kitutu Kimono the Minister for Karamoja Affairs, under the Office of the Prime Minister, her brother, and nephew. This website has established from top sources that the ‘very irked’ Prime Minister, Hon. Robinah Musafiri Nabbanja who sources say was very “disturbed’ by the news called a crisis meeting early today to address the impulse following a call from H.E the president.
The permanent secretary Office of the Minister Keith Muhakanizi confirmed the developments. “It’s true the Anti-Corruption Unit under State House is investigating the matter along with police and other intelligence units. We shall make sure whoever is involved is prosecuted,” said Muhakanizi.
Yesterday Muhakanizi released a statement noting that the diversion of the iron sheets intended for the people in Karamoja shall be investigated. “Action will be taken against the perpetrators including recovery and prosecution of those involved,” he wrote.
Intelligence sources privy to the investigations revealed to us that they got tip-off from residents in Namusindwa, after scores of people were purchasing iron sheets labeled “For Office of the Prime Minister”. The Head of the State House Anti-Corruption Unit Brig. Henry Isoke confirmed that they are investigating the matter.
Stealing With Impunity?
Last year as Government embarked on the disarmament program in Karamoja, the Karamoja Parliamentary Group floated an idea to the government to have the errant youth warriors engaged in cattle rustling settled with support in form of iron sheets. According to the Napak Woman Member of Parliament Hon Nakut Faith Loru Chuna, a Supplementary budget was presented to Parliament and passed. “This money was meant to support the purchase of over 100,000 iron sheets to support vulnerable groups, the Karachunas, the reformed warriors in Karamoja,” said Nakut. The 100,000 iron sheets were purchased from the shs87.5bn supplementary budget passed by Parliament for the UPDF operations in Karamoja region.
She described it as shocking to find that the iron sheets meant for Karamoja ended up in Namusindwa near where Maria Goretti Kitutu hails from.
Karamoja MPs Demand Apology
Arrests and Prosecution notwithstanding, the Karamoja legislators have demanded that Hon Maria Goretti Kitutu immediately apologizes to the Karamojongs and also requested the appointing authority immediately replaces her as the Karamoja Affairs Minister.
“The Hon Minister must apologize to us the Karamojongs for the wrong doing much as we await a full investigation and audit report from those tasked with the investigations,” she said. Adding; “We now know that Kitutu doesn’t have a heart for the people of Karamoja who are suffering and thus warn her not o dare step foot in Karamoja soils. We also request that H.E. the president replace her immediately. Efforts to get a comment from Hon Maria Goretti Kitutu proved futile since she didn’t pick up our calls.
Museveni Vows To Crush Corrupt Govt Officials
While speaking during the NRM liberation Day celebrations in Kakumiro President Museveni warned government officials against corruption.
“I have heard of girls being exploited sexually as bribe for jobs. Devoted members of the public, get evidence and we expunge and roast those pigs- and jail them in Luzira since it has abundant space for criminals,” Mr Museveni said on Thursday.
Official government data suggests that about 72 per cent of Uganda’s over 44 million population are aged under 35, amidst high levels of unemployment, which predisposes the youthful to inducement for jobs and high risks of employment fraud.
