KAMPALA, Uganda [SHIFT MEDIA] Government has announced prioritizing usage of renewable energy especially in scaling agriculture mechanization.
The Assistant Commissioner for Irrigation and drainage at the Ministry of Agriculture Animal Industry and Fisheries (MAAIF), Eng Dominic Mucunguzi said also top on the agenda is scaling of value addition especially in curbing of post harvest Loses using Solar powered storage facilities.
Mucunguzi was speaking at the Uganda Solar Energy Association (USEA) National Solar Energy EXPO held at the Uganda Manufacturers Association (UMA) show grounds in Lugogo.
The exhibition that attracted scores of Solar firms, including Ecozen, the leading manufacturers of solar powered cold storage rooms and solar powered water punps runs from July 25-27.
Ecozen Show Cases
Scores of show goers were amazed at the Ecozen Solar powered cold storage that was at display at the show grounds.
Mr Kamlesh Samaliya the Vice President in charge of Business Development at Ecozen told journalists that the new innovation is a great milestone towards perfection of storage or perishables like fruits, vegetables, milk, diary products, and fish.
“The beauty about the Ecozen solar powered cold storage is that its mobile, it can be placed anywhere, either at the farmgate, or in markets,” said Kamlesh
Kamlesh said the new innovation from India is now being utilised in 10. African countries.
“With this new innovation, farmers in Uganda can be assured of reduction on loses attributed to perishables, and be assured of saving on energy costs,” he said.
He said Ecozen is patterning with a local agent in Uganda, Clean Energy Partnership for Africa (CEPA) Limited.
The CEO CEPAS, Mr David Ebong said the Ecozen Solar powered cold storage is a big relief to Ugandan farmers
“our appeal to government is to consider reducing taxes on importation of this cold storage unit to enable its cist reduce from the Ugx 100m.to a fee that is affordable to most rural farmers in Uganda
